Learn more about the Hajj.

The annual pilgrimage to Mecca that Muslims are required to make at least once in their lives is known as the Hajj, sometimes spelled Haj. The Arabic meaning of the term hajj is “to intend a journey.”
The five pillars of Islam are the hajj, salat (daily prayer), zakat (almsgiving), sawm (fasting during Ramadan), and shahadah (statement of faith).

Who ought to perform the Hajj?

Adult Muslims are required to perform the Hajj at least once in their lifetime. They must be able to make the trip both financially and physically, and they must be of sound mind. After finishing the pilgrimage, a person might add the title Hajji to their name.

When is Hajj?

The pilgrimage must take place in Dhu al-Hijja, the final month of the Islamic calendar. The Hajj is performed from the eighth to the twelfth day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
Because the Islamic calendar is based on the lunar year, the date varies every year and is 10 to 11 days earlier than the previous year in the Gregorian calendar. It is expected to happen in 2017 on August 30 or September 1 at the latest.

On Hajj, how many people travel?

Approximately two to three million pilgrims from all over the world come to Mecca each year to perform the Hajj. It is the world’s biggest single assembly of people.

How did the Hajj begin?

Although the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) instituted the rituals of Hajj, they may be traced back to Prophet Ibrahim (alaihis salaam), commonly known as Abraham in English, based on the Qur’an.

Muslims hold that Allah gave Ibrahim (alaihis salaam) the command to abandon his son Ismail and his wife Hajar in the desert in the prehistoric Mecca. Hajar rushed anxiously seven times between the two hills of Safa and Marwah, looking for water, but he found none. When she finally made her way back to Ismail, she was heartbroken to see the infant scraping the ground with his leg and a water fountain had appeared.

This is the Zamzam Well, located in Mecca’s Masjid al-Haram. To drink its water, pilgrims who are completing the Hajj or the Umrah pilgrimage come to the well.

What are the Hajj rituals?

The following are the principal Hajj rituals:
Ihram: As pilgrims arrive in Mecca for the Hajj, they put on the ihram (purity) garment. Men are required to dress in the ihram, which consists of two seamless white sheets wrapped over the body, along with sandals. This dress represents equality and togetherness in addition to purity because it is devoid of any overt symbols of wealth, class, status, or culture. Women are subject to less stringent requirements and typically wear all-white clothing, leaving only their hands and faces exposed.
Among other prohibitions, pilgrims wearing ihram are not allowed to cut their hair or nails, have sex, dispute, or fight.

Tawaf: In Masjid Al-Haram, each individual completes seven counterclockwise laps around the Ka’aba, the cube-shaped structure that serves as the global center of Muslim prayer. The most revered location in Islam is the Ka’aba, which was constructed by Ibrahim (alaihis salaam).

Al-Safa and Al-Marwah: Just as Hajar did when she was searching for water, pilgrims run seven times between these two mountains.

Mount Arafat: To stand in vigil, pilgrims travel to the plains of Mount Arafat, the site of the Prophet Muhammad’s (sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) last sermon.

Stoning the Devil: They carry out a symbolic stoning ceremony, known as jamarat, by throwing stones at three walls, first in Arafat, and then in Muzdalfah and Mina. This represents the devil’s attempt to divert Ibrahim (alaihis salaam) from obeying Allah, which was thwarted when the prophet struck him three times with stones.

Eid ul Adha: The three-day celebration of Eid ul Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, begins on the tenth day of the month of Dhu al-Hijja. In order to finish their hajj, the pilgrims carry out other ceremonies in addition to the qurbani ritual of animal sacrifice.

The Arabic holiday known as QurbaniQurbani, or Udiyah, honors the sacrifice that Ibrahim (alaihis salaam) was prepared to make on behalf of his son Ismail (alaihis salaam), whom Allah spared by sending a ram to take his place.

What distinguishes the Umrah from the Hajj?

At any other time of the year, pilgrims are welcome to travel to Mecca to carry out the rites. Known as Umrah, this pilgrimage is optional in contrast to Hajj, which is performed on predetermined Islamic dates.
